Run sudo -v and enter your password. If you get “command not found”, or a message that you’re not in the sudoers file, skip to the next section.
The command finds your downloads folder by itself, whatever it’s called in your language. sudo apt install "$(xdg-user-dir DOWNLOAD)/Bebra.deb"
Find Bebra in the application menu and click any country tile. An account without a subscription gets the Buy Bebra VPN window first, offering the trial and the plans. Already paid? Use Already have a subscription? → Sign in to account in the same window to switch to the account you paid with.
That’s what happens if you set a root password while installing Debian. The installer then leaves sudo out entirely. If you left the root password empty, sudo is there from the start.
Install the package as root instead. The command asks for the root password, and your own shell fills in the file path before switching users, so it points to your downloads folder rather than to /root.
su - -c "apt install '$(xdg-user-dir DOWNLOAD)/Bebra.deb'"
To use sudo from now on, install it and add yourself to the sudo group. The group takes effect after you log out and back in.
su - -c "apt install sudo && adduser $USER sudo"
Closing the window doesn’t end the connection. Bebra moves to the tray, but not every desktop shows its icon right away.
GNOME doesn’t display icons of background apps on its own. Install the AppIndicator extension, log out and back in, then enable it with the second command.
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
gnome-extensions enable [email protected]
Both have a tray out of the box, and the Bebra icon sits on the panel next to the clock. Right-click it for a menu that reopens the window or quits the app.
If the package doesn’t suit you, there’s an AppImage under the download button. It needs FUSE 2 (libfuse2 on Debian 12, libfuse2t64 on Debian 13) and chmod +x. On its first connection it asks for an administrator password to install its own service.
Clear the old Bebra.deb out of your downloads folder before an upgrade. Otherwise the browser saves the new one under a different name, and the command reinstalls the old version. Then download the new package and run the same install command. apt remove bebra-client uninstalls it, through sudo or su - -c.

You probably switched with plain su, without the dash. Since Debian 10 that keeps your own PATH, which doesn’t include /usr/sbin where adduser lives. Exit and switch again with su -.
Group membership is set when you log in. Closing and reopening the terminal isn’t enough, so log out of your session and back in. Run groups to check that sudo is now listed.
apt pulls it in with the package. The package builds its connection through NetworkManager, which is why it’s listed as a dependency.
Yes. The package is built for Debian 12 and newer releases.
